TECHNOLOGY FOCUS

3GPP Long-Term Evolution networks are being rolled out commercially as the new standard for mobile broadband. Furthermore it can be expected that LTE Advanced as defined in the latest version of the standard will be the dominating standard for 4G technology globally. There is a trend to simplify the management of LTE networks by use of auto-configuration and auto-optimization. However, the complexity of LTE system also place new demands on the Operations and Maintenances of the network. Self-Organizing Networks (SON) is seen as one of the promising area for an operator to save operational expenditures.

COURSE CONTENTS

This course will give participants an overview of the SON technology as defined in the different releases of LTE (Release 8, 9 and 10). After introducing the drivers and use cases for SON, the basic framework and different architectures are presented. The course will outline the automatic configuration procedures of a base station, how to set up interfaces and to retrieve configuration parameter. Afterwards, different self-optimization procedures are presented including the detailed signaling messages over the air and across the interfaces. Last but not least the applicability of SON to Heterogeneous Networks and means for inter-cell interference coordination is presented.
